There are plenty of books that I love getting from the library. Even while our library has been closed, we’ve made extensive use of the digital and digital audio collections. But especially for seasonal books, like kids Halloween books, I love having a decent collection at home to read over and over, year after year.
There are a million options for Halloween picture books out there, but these 25 are our very favorites that we have copies of in our home. We love pulling them out each year, and my kids love the sense of comfort from these familiar, fun titles.

Our Favorite Kids Halloween Books to Own
This is one of my number one favorite Halloween books for kids. It’s not scary, but ever so slightly spooky. The story follows a little rabbit who thinks the carrots in the field near him are following him, though no one believes him. The end has a twist – go find out if Jasper was right!
I love this story of a variety of Halloween characters trying to move a big pumpkin off the vine. It’s too big for any of them, but the little bat has a great idea!
Rebecca Estelle HATES pumpkins and has since it was the only food her family had to eat when she was a little girl. But when pumpkins start growing in her yard, she must figure out a way to overcome her hatred and find something to do with them! You’ll want to keep reading this Halloween book for kids well through Thanksgiving!
While I love Creepy Carrots the most, my kids might just prefer its sequel as one of their favorite kids Halloween books. Jasper is back, and this time he’s spooked by some very creepy underwear. How is he going to escape their gaze?
This brave little lady is not afraid of a thing, and certainly not any spooky Halloween sights and sounds. But things are getting juuuust a bit much! A perfect kids Halloween book that isn’t too scary.
An absolute classic, this kids Halloween book is worth reading over and over. Kids big and small will love the rhymes and rhythm and the sweet story of teamwork. Don’t forget to watch the little cartoon of it, too!
Little Blue Truck anything is a winner in our house, and the Halloween special is no exception. I love that Little Blue models kindness and friendship, and that’s true in costume in this children’s Halloween book, too!
This old Halloween book for kids is delightful and funny without being scary. Sam invites all his friends to a party at his home, and every single one brings popcorn! So much, in fact, that it fills the whole house. What will they do to get it out before his parents return?
This is a book, however, that my kids definitely have strong conversations about when we read, however. We discuss how the characters dressing up as they do is engaging in cultural appropriation and that it is wrong.
What does a witch do with a bunch of ghosts? Why, put them to work, of course! They make great tablecloths, sheets, and more. One of those delightfully sweet little Halloween books for kids!
Any little ghoul or goblin will delight in this sweet and short Halloween story that goes along with the song. Sing it instead of reading if you wish!
The sweetest little board book, this is great even not in the set of kids Halloween books. Three little baby owls wonder when their mother will return. Is she okay? Will she continue to care for them? Of course she will!
Leo isn’t your usual ghost. He has feelings, and just wants to be friends. But it’s tricky when everyone is scared of him! How will he manage to make some new friends? This is one of those kids Halloween books that’s a sweet little winner. (It’s written by Mac Barnett; what else would you expect?)
You really cannot go wrong with Sandra Boynton, and Spooky Pookie and EEK! Halloween! are not exceptions. Just as cute and charming as the other Pook books, these two are so fun for the youngest of readers!
The Bears are back and this time it’s Halloween. As with their other books, this one is great for sharing a small moral with sweet characters.
It’s always sad to put out those pumpkins when they’re done, but it’s really fun to watch them morph into something special. And how great is it that they can start the process of creating a new pumpkin?
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably read Goodnight Moon 8 gazillion times. And you’ll probably love this spoof on the original with all kinds of Halloween tricks.
Here’s a hint – this book isn’t actually so scary. You’ll have to read and see why this children’s Halloween book SEEEMS to be scary!
If you’ve read any of the other “there was an old lady books,” you’re sure to love this Halloween kids book version. She goes for a bat, a ghost, a goblin, and more in this silly read!
Ghosts are tricky. They can be great friends, or they can get offended easily. This guide is perfect to connect with all the little ghosties in your life. While not specifically a Halloween picture book, it’s perfect for the season.
We love Pete the Cat at our house, and it’s so fun seeing him return in this Halloween adventure!
Have you ever anxiously waited for a pumpkin to be ready? This little boy excitedly visits grandpas farm, but finds he must be patient for his jack o’lantern to come to life. A sweet little kids Halloween board book!
A perfect seasonal companion for teaching math and science, this book has great little extras like practice with skip counting. One of those kids Halloween books that covers many bases!
If you have slightly older kids, they’re sure to love all these fun (and funny) facts about Halloween. They’ll be just a little spooked and learn something at the same time!
It doesn’t get sweeter than the Llama Llama books, and the Halloween kids book version is equally fun. It’s a perfect length llama board book!
