This month, we’ve been reading Lalani of the Distant Sea for the Global Children’s Book Club. We loved this middle grade fantasy that helped us consider everyday heroes, the power hidden in marginalized groups, and what it means to be brave.

If you loved Lalani, too, here are some other books you might enjoy. Some are ones we’ve personally read, and some are on our to-read list!

Books Like Lalani of the Distant Sea

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon

With the folklore woven into the story and a powerful female protagonist, the setup of Lalani reminded me quite a bit of Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, which we adored.

We Dream of Space

We Dream of Space is the author, Erin Entrada Kelly’s book that just won a Newbery Honor. I can’t wait to read this one!

Echo

This book is ultra popular, and for good reason. A young boy meets three sisters in a forest who give him a harmonica. The harmonica then travels through time and place and weaves a story to connect them all.

When You Trap A Tiger

This recent Newbery Medal recipient beautifully integrates Korean folklore.

Prairie Lotus

An ordinary heroine who wants to learn and do important things battles prejudice.

The Girl Who Drank the Moon

A girl is raised by magic and protectors and adventures through places and with creatures to learn how to manage her gifts. This one is ethereal and really beautiful.
